FEMALE POWEROften, you think of women as sex objects,

Disrobe them mentally while entertaining lascivious thoughts.

You believe they exist only to fulfil your bodily cravings,

Or to perform household tasks which are sheer drudgery.

You tease, torment and rape them, not caring what age they are,

But you are no match to their inner reservoirs of deep quiet strength.

You forget that many of them have made mighty kingdoms fall,

Scaled great heights in all fields of human endeavour.

You know she can open doors for herself,

Can kill cockroaches and lift gas cylinders.

She willingly takes up roles which need empathy,

Keeping your home, hearth and family working in harmony.

She does not really need tips on driving,

Nor does she need your shoulder to cry upon.

Backed by her intuitive powers and higher EQ,

She can strike a better healthy work-life balance.

If there is a promotion to be had, she can get it on merit,

She can shatter glass ceilings all by herself.

If you stare at her, she can stare right back at you,

She can refuse to be intimated, bullied or silenced.

She can teach her sons to respect women,

And her daughters to respect themselves.

She is free to wear what she wants,

Work where she wants, shop where she wants.

You may overpower her in a moment of weakness,

But that fleeting pleasure could ruin your life forever.

She does not need you to empower her,

She is quite capable of empowering herself.

I may become strong and rise above a ‘like’ and a ‘comment’,

Absence of others’ approval never leaving me in torment.

Not getting swayed by other’s views, their power and pelf,

Open to accepting only constructive criticism, working on myself.

Wise enough to know the limitations of what I think I know,

Always giving the more knowledgeable a courteous bow.

To be able to love the one whom I consider my opponent,

On equanimity, rationality and fairness I may wax eloquent.

Accepting my station in life, being confident but humble,

Never falling prey to a ‘You-are-OK-I-am-not-OK’ jumble.

As tender as a coconut tree, flexible yet strong,

Bowing to mighty cyclones, never falling along.

Being aware that I have to walk alone on this path of life,

Help from others alone enabling me to overcome strife.

Brilliant at illuminating other’s strong points, learning from them,

Helping to polish their qualities, making them a sparkling gem.

Never afraid to ask questions, keeping my ear to the ground,

Adapting to change, leading by example all those around.

Doubtful enough to realize the soft power of faith under a hardened dogmatic crust,

Courageous enough to share my reality with those in whom I can place my trust.

happiness

We are like grains of sand

On a beach sunlit by brilliant rays of hope;

Repeatedly we get swept back by strong relentless waves

Of our own wishes and desires,

Leaving us in torment at times, unable to cope.

They keep coming one after the other

Keeping us tied to our senses;

Distracting us from the true purpose of life,

Always wanting more and more,

Vulnerable, never able to mend our fences.

Fulfilment of one does not always mean

Growing out of it;

Instead, the intensity could get multiplied,

Leaving us with a poor self-perception

And an inner state lacking happiness, dark and poorly lit.

Often we wonder if there is a way

To become like a hard rock;

Having an inner resilience

Bouncing back the waves which keep splashing against us,

Receiving cravings and desires which we can simply mock.

Let them break on our external crust

And return to their meaningless vastness;

Leaving us in the soft glow of peace,

Attaining harmony between our external and internal selves,

Enjoying pure bliss and happiness.

If this were indeed to happen,

Would we still be vibrant and alive?

Where would be the need to constantly challenge our own selves

With newer and higher goals;

Forever expanding, mind buzzing with new ideas like a bee-hive?

The trick possibly is in sifting the good ones from the bad ones,

Using our intellect to discriminate and judge;

Working only upon the benign ones,

With all our resources and natural gifts,

Bringing those to fruition with a skilful nudge.

Enjoying magnificent sunsets and living glorious moonlit nights,

Cheeks feeling the soft touch of a gentle breeze,

Admiring the grace and beauty of clouds passing by,

Being one with the seagulls flapping overhead

Bowing our head to the eternal power which created the nature’s lullaby.

We shall then be able to explore new frontiers of creativity,

A clear gaze helping us to navigate the rapids of life, enabling a win;

Linking enjoyment to the journey and not to a destination,

Going with the flow, simply living in the present,

Living life to the hilt, finding the fountain-head of true happiness within.

My dear Heart…..

heart care

Seven years back, when you protested, the plumbing had to be set right;
I became aware that you existed, now you continue working with all your might.

I feel your throb throughout my body, in my feet, in my arms, in my ears;
I hear the pulse even in my head, realize you have been there all these years.

Never have you asked for a vacation, relentlessly you go on thumping;
Supplying blood to all corners of the body, you always keep pumping.

A skip on your part and I go crazy, a flutter and things around me go hazy;
You may label me a couch potato, I always try not to be too lazy.

The soothing music of your pulse, sometime slow, sometime fast;
Like the strains of a vibrant drum filling up my being´s theater vast.

I walk and I exercise, keeping both of us fit with positive stress;
I drive away mundane woes, playing music, sharing my thoughts on WordPress.

I know hobbies make you relax, so do good company, laughter and joy;
Routine visits to the doctor and attention bestowed you do enjoy.

You are the seat of my consciousness, having intelligence of your own,
Silently whispering to my mind what to enjoy and what to disown.

You continue to exhort me to shun anger, jealousy, contempt and greed,
Leading a life of detachment, excitement of many “likes” I may no longer need.

With yoga, meditation and music, I try to gravitate towards a balanced life,
Living with poise and equanimity, feeling likewise in times of joy and strife.

I am grateful for the support you provide, so reassuring is your rhythmic beat,
Life´s harsh slings and arrows I can face, breathing in the air pure and sweet.

In our lives, you played the role of a dynamic and bustling airport,
From which we soared in life´s azure skies, enjoying our flights of high import;
Some took to exploring various corners of our Mother Earth,
Of diplomats, businessmen and bankers amongst us there is no dearth.

Some flew literally high while others specialized in foretelling weather,
Some rose to positions of eminence in industries as diverse as IT and leather;
The allure of entrepreneurship and private sector careers proved irresistible to some,
Many found academics, social entrepreneurship and public services less worrisome.

Probability theories taught us to manage uncertainty at life´s myriad stations,
Laws of motion led us to motivate people and have positive interpersonal relations;
Differential calculus taught us to analyze situations without tears,
Integral exhorted us to take an overall strategic view in all spheres.

Structure of elementary particles made us discover forces of spirituality in life,
Principles of magnetism and radiation helped shape our career and family life;
Theory of relativity taught us the art of empathy and understanding others better,
Bending of light forewarned us of the perils of loose talk, gossip and a wrong letter.

While in your hallowed portals, we enjoyed bunking classes,
The brainy ones worked on assignments which were copied by the masses;
Cornering important books from the Central Library was a critical vocation,
For poking fun at our teachers, Coffee House was the prime location.

Improptu musical sessions led to greater bonding on the open green lawn,
Studious ones sneaked upto the hostel terrace to study till the next dawn;
Evening visits to Kamla Market after feasting on goodies sent by devoted mothers,
Bird-watching for some, an act of revolt against the listless hostel meals for others.

Life offered transient infatuations to some, others found their long term soul mates,
Cupid was never failing in its duties when it came to fixing platonic dates;
Evening shadows led to the Lovers´ Lane where future plans were drawn,
Many of these – struck by life`s harsh slings and arrows – were eventually withdrawn.

Here is an interesting post which cites words of wisdom from some of our famous authors.

Writing isn’t easy. In fact, it can be painfully difficult. Why? Because it’s thinking, but on paper. “To write well is to think clearly. That’s why it’s so hard,” said Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author David McCullough.

Many great writers, including Joan Didion and Don DeLillo, have said that their purpose for putting words on paper is to find clarity with their thoughts, and have described the process of writing as one of becoming familiar with their own minds.

“I find that by putting things in writing I can understand them and see them a little more objectively,” Hunter S. Thompson wrote in a 1958 letter. “For words are merely tools and if you use the right ones you can actually put even your life in order.”

If you’re a writer, then you’re likely both devoted to your craft and eternally frustrated by it —…

The latest family movie soon to hit a restricted number of screens is “Shankar-the bold”. It captures the life and times of the youngest one in our family, right from his birth till the time he celebrates his second birthday. Shankar The Bold cd cover

Preparing for the Movie

As always, the process remains the same. Going through family pictures and videos. Selecting the ones which are worth preserving. Conceptualizing the overall script. Deciding on various sections. Putting them in a tentative sequence. Screening the photos once again. Rearranging some of these into newer sections. Putting these through an Adobe Photoshop wringer.

Selecting the music to be used in the background. Consulting friends and family members for the choice of music. Seeking the help of others to download relevant songs. For some favourite songs, creating a special sequence of the visuals, in sync with the lyrics. Rearranging the script, if necessary.

Getting Connected

For the period to be covered, ensuring that all important events and people are getting covered. Retrieving poems, notes and letters specifically composed for some of these events. Planning to use these at appropriate places in the narrative. Using instrumental music as a backdrop so it does not distract from the verbal content on the screen.

The younger generation needs to understand the background of the family. It also needs to know who all comprise the extended family. Members are spread over all the continents. To collect their photos, getting their names and relationships right and inserting them in the narrative is no mean task.

Elders in the family are immensely useful in providing the finer details of the lives and times of our ancestors. A whiff of nostalgia, laced with family history, ensures that the movie does not remain an exercise in narcissism. Instead, it ends up being a valuable addition to the family archives.

Composing the Movie

There are several movie-making softwares available. The one that we have liked is Womble Multimedia. Arranging the photos section-wise and inserting relevant audio tracks is a skill which one learns over a period of time.

Once the movie has been composed, the question of its disc reproduction comes up. Each set has to be individually checked for its correctness. Defects in sound track or composition have to be ironed out. Eventually, a Master Disc takes shape. This is again played out on a dvd player, just to check that the aspect ratio and other details are well taken care of.

Scope for Innovation

Making each family movie unique is one of the serious challenges. For the latest offering, we came up with the idea of linking family events to important events. So, if the boy was born at a time when an important merger and acquisition had taken place in the business world, the event found a mention in the narrative.

Since ours is a family of movie buffs, we decided to link important family events to movies released around that time. Let us say a marriage in the family took place in a year in which a blockbuster had hit the silver screen. So, a short clip from the movie found a place in the narrative.

A Labor of Love

An exhausting but uplifting process. The unalloyed joy of creativity. The satisfaction of having made something which entertains, educates and celebrates a milestone for the family. Something which the younger ones would cherish when they grow up. A fragment of the subtle connection between the past and the future.
